In Lieu of Flowers

The phrase ‘In lieu of flowers’ does not mean that there will be no flowers at a funeral, rather it means that the family have decided to limit floral tributes to immediate family only and others, if they wish, are invited to make a donation to charity.

Staff members
Asking your family and friends to make donations to St Raphael’s Hospice instead of sending flowers is a wonderful way to help make a difference to over 800 local people each year who have a terminal illness and who are supported by the Hospice which serves the two Boroughs of Merton and Sutton.

Such gifts may be encouraged in an advertisement or funeral notice using the phrase

‘In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to be made to St Raphael’s Hospice.’

We appreciate that these donations are made at difficult times and we want the process to be a simple as possible.

If you have lost a loved one and would like donations sent to St Raphael’s Hospice, please ask us for a supply of our donation envelopes. These are suitable to be placed on the pews at a church or crematorium. Your funeral director will be pleased to advise you.

Donation envelope

There is space on the donation envelope for the name and address of each donor, which enables all to be written to and thanked afterwards. There is also space for a “Gift Aid” declaration for individual donations. This is important, as every donation which is “gift aided” is worth an extra 25% to the hospice.

Alternatively, ask for cheques to be made out to:
St Raphael’s Hospice and posted to:
St Raphael’s Hospice,
Tobit Fundraising Office,
London Road,
North Cheam
Surrey, SM3 9DX.

If doing this, remember to also include the name of the person in whose memory the donation is being made and the name and address of the person making the donation.

When we receive “In Memory” donations, we send a thank you to the donor and an acknowledgement to the next of kin (if requested and address provided).

If requested, we can also send the next of kin, or family member handling the funeral arrangements, a complete list of the names and addresses of the donors and the grand total received in memory of your loved one.

There are other ways in which you can help St Raphael’s Hospice, either after having had a collection at the funeral in memory of your loved one, or instead of a collection.

Or to make things easier—use our donation envelopes! We can provide you with as many as you may need, just call the Tribute Fund Officer or the hospice fundraising department on 020 8254 2450.

If you would like more information about any subject in this leaflet please contact the In Memory Fundraiser at the Hospice Fundraising Department on 020 8254 2450.
